As part of the campaign, the provincial government has hired Ben Levin, former Deputy Minister of Education, to lead a one-person commission to review the province’s tuition fee and financial accessibility policies.
Shockingly, no public consultations are planned as part of the Commission’s work. This decision confirms students’ fears that the commission has been established mainly to justify existing government choices, like deregulating tuition fees.
Students want to take the Commission back to its original mandate of finding ways to improve on the tuition fee freeze policy. We intend to make room for progressive choices like tuition fee reductions, by organising our own public consultations. We want to ensure that as many students’ and community members’ voices are heard as possible.
Watch for student-organised public fora on your campus.
